There rests a glass jar on a table.
Inside are a number of dried beans,
beside that jar is a pen and notepad
to jot down your best guess, how many
beans are inside this glass jar.
I spot a singular cannellini
among the many kidneys inside.
I pause and take my best guess,
counting upwards on each side
counting sideways from left to right.
It’s not that I’m transfixed
by the one white bean in a mass of red,
but I can’t help to stop and wonder if
I’m the only one counting beans from a jar?
of which I count 224, which coincidentally
could have been 225, if it were not
for the sole cannellini that caught my eye.
